“HSY – A Designer That Defines Class”

Success is most often achieved by those who don’t know that failure is inevitable. An independent fashion designer’s journey through 24 years”

It’s noon, and somewhere in the New York City, the front shades of a row of condos are lowered against a hazy glare. Through the metal gate, the courtyard is silent, except for the distant splat of a fountain against its plastic basin. Then comes that 5 year old boy sitting on a bench drawing something on the page and playing with colours. Hassan come here, mama has something to show you. His mother calling him from inside. Hassan in his excitement ran towards his mama. See I have bought new clothes for my boy.

Hassan always wants to wear new clothes like his other classmates but his mother who is working day and night to raise his son all alone is unable to fulfill all his dreams and couldn’t buy him new clothes. She is trying her best just to give him a promising future and all what he wants in his life. His childish mind desires for clothes instead of toys. At that time there was something in his mind which he couldn’t describe in words but used to tell his mother about the dream wardrobe that he would have one day. He not only builds his own wardrobe but making dream clothes for people all over the world. This is the story of a boy the world now known as HSY.

In school Hassan is a quiet but a very bright student. Always a topper whether it’s studies or any other activities. He is mama’s favourite boy and mama always proud of him. That boy who’s always thinking about doing something big to build his dream wardrobe completes his early education in New York. Born in Pakistan and raised by only his mother in New York, he faced so many challenges throughout his childhood starting from shifting countries to living away from his father and his only sister.

Upon returning back to Pakistan his mother was not financially strong so he decided to do something. He knew there’s something deep in his mind. While planning about future and thinking on how to overcome his mother’s burden there comes a dark moment in his life. It was November 13, with a flood of thoughts in his mind walking on the road side and suddenly a car hit him and next moment he was lying on the road all alone. His world turned into darkness. In this terrible accident, he lost his eyesight and became blind for almost one and half year. That was the turning point in his life. This accident changed everything around him. His life was ended after this accident.

“I was dark, not just dark my eyes, dark my heart, dark everything around me”

He could only hear his mother crying of misery. Eyes full of tears and nerves shattered by the fear of being blind for his whole life, he decided to do something exceptional and become someone not conventional. Luckily he got his eyesight back but unluckily he had undergone 16 corrective surgeries for that. For a year, the only colour he could see is Red. For him red is the colour of life. When he got his eyesight back, he told his mother that he wants to do things that he likes the most. It wasn’t about designing clothes. It was about KHOOBSURTI.

He wants to see beautiful things, wants to make things that make other people feel beautiful. He wants to be around colours, wants to create things with patterns that he couldn’t see before. At first his mother didn’t agree with him as she wanted him to join army or become a CSS officer. Many people opposed his decision as people were like “DARZI BANAY GA KYA”. But he was very determined in his decision. After a long debate, he finally got the permission but as his mother always wanted him to be an educated person so she said if you want to be a designer first go and find some good fashion schools, get yourself educated in fashion designing and then continue because this is also a profession.

In 1990, he got admission in Pakistan School of Fashion Design (PSFD). His mother was not financially very strong and therefore he had to work at pace as a checkout boy to pay his dues and at the same time worked in a leather factory. Finally in 1994, after 4 years of struggle and hard work he topped the college and got his degree in fashion designing. At the same time he wanted to work as a model but was rejected by many because he had so many scars on his face due to the accident he met when he was 16. Due to all the tragedies in his life, he fell into depression but with the support of his mom, sister and his gut, he turned the table and became extraordinary. He did not take too long to shift from a rejected model to rejecting models.

Starting as a fashion choreographer in 1994, Hassan worked both as a choreographer and designer in various shows within Pakistan and international shows including Dubai, London, New York City, and Toronto. In 1996 he perused his career as a fashion designer, that time he did a lot of local shows , traveled a lot and did lots of international shows. During that time he decided not to throw away his career and become someone conventional. He learnt how clothes are put together, the philosophy behind them that led to the opening of his fashion house.

THAT 5 YEAR OLD BOY DREAMING ABOUT HIS OWN WARDROBE BECAME HASSAN SHEHERYAR YASEEN AKA HSY. The year 2000 marked the introduction of Hassan’s own fashion label, HSY. Starting as a bridal and formal wear couture house, it has since become one of the most recognized South Asian fashion labels in the world and currently employs over 350 people and six stores internationally, with the flagship studio based in Lahore. In 2003, Karachi-based Diva Magazine placed Hassan on the cover of their “MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE” issue and also as one of their 10 Faces of the Year. HSY is the winner of Lux style Fashion designer of the year award 2005-6.

HSY on ramp with different models

THE BIGGEST PART IN THE HSY SUCCESS STORY IS THAT HE REFUSED TO ACCEPT FAILURE AS AN OPTION. He had faith that his passion could make anything happen. In a country where most young people look towards their family for support and financial help, Hassan never asked his family for help and believed he could achieve anything. He made a game plan and followed through. He just didn’t have the resources or the clout to become a designer. Today, he is a force to be reckoned with. He is one of those few who didn’t give up. A salutatorian graduate of the Pakistan School of Fashion Design (class of 2000), Hassan is affiliated with the LA CHAMBRE SYNDICALE DE LA COUTURE PARISIENNE IN FRANCE.

He holds an honours degree in couture and currently serves as a member of the board of directors and the executive committee of the fashion institution he graduated from. He celebrated his 2 decades into Pakistani fashion industry.

“I have been fortunate to have been a part of Pakistan’s fashion industry from when it was a mere fledgling, to playing a part in what it is today, a thriving vibrant space. In these past twenty years, I have been privileged to work with some of the region’s most prolific personalities and minds, from fashion to entertainment, brands to television. I look forward for another twenty years of directional expansion, collaborations and continuing to push Pakistani fashion industry within Pakistan and globally”

Beside his commercial success, HSY has been involved with charity work in collaboration with Shaukat Khanum Hospital. Designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin (HSY) says he wants to give talented youths the resources to materialise their dreams under an initiative he has launched,“MUSAFIR”. Hailing from various walks of life, 24 youths have been selected who will be extended every possible help to make a name for themselves in their areas of choice.
“I personally reached out to these people and told them HSY is there to guide and facilitate them on professional or even personal levels”. He had been a leading fashion personality for more than two decades, but now he had realised it was time that this generation must get up and become positive thinkers to build a society based on tolerance, peace and love.

People should be extending helping hands to each other in society now. I wish to see these 24 youths extending helping hands to as many other talented but resources-less people next year, Takay Diyay Se Diya Jalta Jaye Aur Roshni Hoti Jaye Chaar Su”

His name has been associated with Pakistan’s top fashion showcases currently including all the coveted PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Weeks & PFDC L’Oreal Paris Bridal Weeks, Fashion Pakistan Week and Pantene Bridal Couture Week. The government of Pakistan has just appointed him in the Board of Directors of the school as well and in the Executive Committee. His passion for fashion and creativity is visibly seen in his designs. He aims to expand his fashion label all over the world.

“It’s just a beginning, HSY will be everywhere InshAllah” Hassan Sheheryar Yaseen

Let’s Get You Styled!

Same Outfit With Different Styles

Wearing the same dress everyday is boring but keep changing the way it looks is something very fun to do. With an army of dresses you can conquer the world of fashion, not really. All you need to be is Creative and Unique.

This is not necessary that one have to get lots of tees and bundles of pants to look trendy and chic every day. If you have a pair of denim pants and few tee and button up shirts, or some dresses you can rock the look every day just by adding or subtracting the accessories you have. You can easily get a different look every day. It is not even too difficult at all to wear same outfit. We all have plenty of staples in our wardrobes and no one can understand the comfort we get by using these.

My this blog post is a COLLABORATION POST with few of my FELLOW FASHIONISTAS. They are from different age groups (18 to 30). I have asked them to participate into my blog and share their looks while wearing same outfit for different occasions. There are few tips which can give you a quick fix while choosing what to wear every day, without spending much on your wardrobe. I HAVE ALSO PUT TOGETHER MY OWN LOOKS WEARING SAME DRESS IN DIFFERENT WAYS.

ONE BLACK CAMI TOP: THREE LOOKS

A black cami top is the most basic item of clothing known to man, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring. This classic piece can go from day to night and is a wardrobe staple. Here’s how to style it in 3 chic new ways.

DAYTIME
ON VACATIONS
ANNUAL DINNER Or WELCOME PARTY

FIRST LOOK

Black cami top can be seen as a casual piece on it’s on, but there are ways to dress it up to make it appropriate for a day out. We love nothing but a simple cami under a denim shirt pair it with same denim pants. Minimal jewellery can add more elegance in this look and light makeup and a nice bag can make this look perfect for a day out with friends.

SECOND LOOK

First, on a glorious spring day why not wear this cami with a floral skirt and a chiffon muffler can add more beauty into this cami top. A pair of heels looks very stylish under this skirt. Add a cross body bag, sunglasses and a messy bun with minimal makeup and you are ready to explore the world.

THIRD LOOK

You can wear this simple cami top even on your annual dinner or welcome party. Pair it with a light colour straight pants. Wear a long black net shrug over this cami top for a classy look. Add a fancy statement necklace and a silver cuff to make a statement with accessories. Black and silver heels can rock this cami top look. You can also add a clutch and wear black pumps instead of heels.

SAJAL’S STYLE

ONE FLORAL SKIRT: TWO WAYS

Long skirts are my all time favourite. While it’s vacation time or any other get together, I love wearing long skirts most of the time. You can go classic with a white blouse or you can wear vibrant colour for something more unusual. Here I share my looks of wearing one skirt in two different ways.

IN MY FIRST LOOK, I wear my COLORFUL PRINTED SKIRT with a blue chiffon blouse. I added a pair of matching earrings used my scarf to make a BANDANA HEADBAND to make this look funky and minimal makeup on. You can carry a hand bag or clutch with this look and also wear heels to look classy.

IN MY SECOND LOOK, I wore a white cotton half sleeves shirt with this printed skirt. You can tuck in your shirt or make a knot to look classy. Then I added COLORFUL BANGLES to make this look attractive. Messy hair bun is always best with a collar shirt. Plain sandals or khussa are perfect with skirts. One can also wear pumps with this skirt for a casual look. And here I am all set to go and rock this skirt.

FOUZIA’S STYLE

ONE CHIFFON CARDIGAN: THREE LOOKS

The easiest way to wear a CARDIGAN is over straight-leg jeans and a T-shirt or tuck it into high-waisted trousers for a slimmer silhouette. Alternatively, invest in a fine knit version and belt it over a midi skirt.
Simply pair it with a blouse and skinny jeans to look CASUAL and NATURAL. Wear a pair of nude strappy sandals to add a little bit of boho feel to the outfit.
Here are my looks while wearing WHITE FLORAL CARDIGAN.

IN FIRST LOOK, I wore this cardigan over Black t-shirt and a black skinny jeans. This look can be super cute and classic with a BLACK BELT, A BLACK CHOKER AND BLUE HEELS.I choosed blue heels with black and white to make it look very stylish and different.

IN SECOND LOOK, I used a white inner and added a white matching belt with this Cardigan. To make this look more classy and chic I added WHITE SUNGLASSES, MATCHING BANGLES and HOOPS WITH A PONYTAIL.This way to wear is the perfect casual weekend look and one of my favs among all other looks.

IN THIRD LOOK, OK SO THIS WAY TO WEAR MIGHT NOT BE FOR EVERYONE BUT I love how it looks. I have turned this Cardigan backward and tied a knot from backward to make this look very different. To make this look elegant I added a BLACK STATEMENT NECKLACE. With a light makeup and hair bun, here I am ready to spend my day.

NISHA’S STYLE

ONE BLACK CULOTTES: THREE WAYS

You can wear CULOTTES AND LOOK COOL. The trick to wearing culottes is to pick the right top then treat them like any old pair of pants. You want a fitted shirt that’s cropped or that you can tuck in to balance out the wider silhouette of the pants.
I always like to look at bloggers and street style pics to help me figure out how to pull off a tricky trend. HERE ARE MY FAVOURITE LOOKS ON HOW TO WEAR CULOTTES.

IN MY FIRST LOOK, I wear White ruffled sleeves shirt with black culottes. I added a sliver watch and white sneakers to make it more comfortable. This look is perfect for a college day lunch or a day out with friends.

IN MY SECOND LOOK, I wear the same black culottes with a RED front open BLOUSE and black inner. A red and black floral muffler around the neck is perfect with this look. A messy hair bun and with minimal makeup I am ready to go to my friend’s birthday party.

IN MY THIRD LOOK, I pair this culottes with a chiffon blue blouse with frills on neck and sleeves. Frills add more beauty to simple blouse. To make a trendy look I tucked in my blouse and added a black belt. My look is complete for the day with matching blue sandals and rough curls. You can add accessories like bangles, necklace, sunglasses and carry a hand bag to make a style statement in this black culottes.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX WHEN CREATING OUTFITS BEFORE SHOPPING. You may be surprised at how many hidden combinations are lurking in your closet.
So these are the best ways SHARED BY MY FELLOW FASHIONISTAS to carry one dress in many ways and always make a new look with the same old piece from your wardrobe.

Participatory Culture

Participatory Culture is a culture in which private individuals (the public) do not act as Consumers only but also as Contributors or Producers (Prosumers). A participatory culture is also one in which members believe their contributions matter and feel some degree of social connection with one another.

I have included my three fellow fashionistas as participants and they are from different age groups. Sajal (30), Fouzia (26), Nisha (18).

I incorporated participatory culture into my blog through different social media Apps (Instagram and WhatsApp). I approached these girls and asked them to share their experience regarding all the styling tips.

The overall task based on participatory culture was a really helpful activity as I shared my style tips in collaboration with my fellow fashionistas. It gives participants the opportunity for contribution and leadership regardless of class, race, education, or socioeconomic status. So in this way participatory culture can create a collaborative environment in which individuals can actively participate.

THE WESTERN TREND IS ALIVE AND WELL

Spring/Summer Western Trends For Girls
Source: Instagram
The western style is extremely diverse. You would rarely see people with the exact same sense of style. Everyone works with the same basis but give it their own twist. That’s what makes it so beautiful.

In spring/summer, western dresses such as, jeans, tops , dresses, sweatshirts, and skirts for women have become wardrobe essentials. Western wear can be very informal, with a t-shirt and blue jeans forming a basic ensemble, or it may consist of tailored formal garments with western accents.Western wear is on the rise and with fashion trends changing so rapidly, it can be hard to keep up. And of course you have to consider your personal taste before you fall down the rabbit hole of what’s “IN”. Just because an ensemble makes it on the runway that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll want to wear it.

ARE YOU READY FOR SPRING/SUMMER FASHION SEASON ? AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ABIHA HASSAN REGARDING ALL THE WESTERN TRENDS IN SPRING/SUMMER.

Abiha Hassan

Abiha Hassan is a young Pakistani girl who blogs about FASHION, MAKEUP, FOOD, TRAVEL AND LIFESTYLE. She started her blogging journey 8 years back when there wasn’t much concept of blogging in Pakistan. She is an active fashion blogger as well as fashion design graduate. Initially she started her blog to write about how the global fashion can be translated into wearable fashion for Pakistani girls, what fashion mistakes should be avoided and how one can style themselves differently creating their own signature look.
As she continues to make her mark, the fashion expert is doing so with positivity and grace. We had a talk with her about rising western trends and her advice on how to style spring/summer attires in a most beautiful way.

1. What are best Western wear for girls in spring/summer ?

Some of the best attires to carry in Spring/Summer are:
FLORAL DRESSES: They’re feminine and breathable and give out a very youthful look. Suitable for many body types. Can be easily accessorised according to the occasion.
CASUAL T’s WITH CULOTTES/PANTS: The skinnies fashion has been fading for long and now it’s more about breathable culottes and pants paired with casual T shirts. It’s super easy to carry them and are also very comfortable to wear.
SKIRTS WITH BLOUSE: Skirts can be a great staple when styling for the summer. They accentuate the waist and can be paired with any top or blouse to complete the outfit. Can be worn with sneakers for a day out or heels for a night out. Can also be paired with a scarf for a modest look.

2. Which colours are perfect for spring/summer for girls ?

Bright but unique colours make up the recommended fashion palette for 2020. COLOURS LIKE FLAME SCARLET, MUSTARD SAFFRON, MOSAIC BLUE, BURNT ORANGE, LAVENDER PEEL, POWDER PINK, CLASSIC AQUA AND PALE CORAL COULD BE GREAT CHOICES. Also, some people who like it subtle and light can go for khaki and pale tones such as cinnamon, frost, ivory, white, parchment, egg shell and shades of grey. They make up great minimalist outfits.

“The best colour in the whole world is the one that looks good on you.”

– Coco Chanel

3. What to wear to different occasions like concerts, birthdays and friends hangouts ?

You can always perk up an outfit by adding accessories and experimenting with different pieces. The fashion today is all about your individual style. Mix and match pieces and create your own statement look, but don’t go overboard with it, know when to stop. IF YOU WANT TO LOOK DIFFERENT, DONT GO FOR MAINSTREAM SAFE-PLAY LOOKS SUCH AS ALL-BLACK OR WHITE AND BLACK FOR SUCH OCCASIONS. Don’t mix too many colours either. Go for a subtle look but add one accent colour to it in the form of a bag, heels or a statement necklace to add the wow factor. Also, never mix different types of prints together- it’s a total NO.

4. Can you give us any tips to look stylish/classy by using simple western wear ? (Like simple t-shirt and jeans)

The modern fashion is all about minimalism. You can rock a pair of jeans with a T shirt by doing these:

  • Tuck in the shirt for a classier look.
  • Add a belt/waist bag to the pants in a bold colour.
  • Hair clips are highly in fashion. Experiment with them in your hair and you might come up with a really sassy look.
  • Wear a watch. Always looks classy.
  • Roll the hem of the jeans to make them look cropped.
  • Pair a chunky necklace with a basic T-shirt and you’re good to go to lunch with your friends.
  • Heels can add glamour to a casual look. You can turn a casual daytime look into a dinner look by wearing them correctly.

5. What should I wear to a Western themed party ?

You can carry a blouse that has fancy details such as slits or net fabric panels, ruffles or balloon sleeves. Pair it up with a sleek formal high-waisted pant. Accessorise with a nice thin belt and drop earrings. Wear nude heels and carry a contemporary clutch with it to complete the look.

6. How accessories can add more glamour to a western outfit ?

Accessories are definitely something that add glamour to the whole look, whether the look is casual or formal. Try that the bag you carry and the shoes you wear are syncing, which means that either they’re from the same colour family or the style is not in conflict with one another. The trouble with many people these days is that they want to fit many accessories into one look. Make sure that your accessories complement one another and enhance the look instead of looking like a confused mess. Sunglasses are a great source to add glamour in spring/summer while giving you protection. Also, invest in a good structured bag because nothing ruins a look like a saggy, discoloured or a rough bag. And lastly, choose your jewellery pieces according to the neckline you’re wearing.

“Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory.”
